January in Films
Jan. 31st, 2024 01:11 pmI watched 12 films this month out of which 2 were short films. 7 of them had some sort of queer romance.
Ballerina (2023)

Korean Netflix female revenge thriller. I loved the acting and cinematography, but I wished there
would have been more about the friendship between the two female leads.
Saltburn (2023)

I gave into peer pressure and watched it because it was trending! I heard it's like Tom Ripley, which I love so I gave this a try. It has some of my favorite topics including class differences, elite school, and obsessive homoerotic pining. Overall I liked it but it bothers me that it could have been better If there had been more chemistry between Felix and Oliver, I feel like Felix and Farleigh had more chemistry. Another thing was that there could have been more horror/mystery to my taste.
EIleen (2023)

Very interesting, mysterious film that almost seems like a short story. Like Saltburn, this also has queer undertones. The atmosphere was very strong in this film.
Ema (2019)

Chilean drama about a couple who loses their adoptive son. I loved this film and how it portrayed dance, community, sex, loss, and how interesting it portrayed the main character Emma.
Take Me Home (2020)
A horrible accident happens which changes the trajectory of three people. The main characters are a lesbian couple who now become sort of like parents while dealing with loss and disability. This film was a little bit too sad for my taste.
Farewell Song (2019)
A band that is on it's last tour. The two girls in the band go through their difficult relationship between each other. I loved the music in this film. It's also sad in the sense that the love is never truly reciprocated in the relationship between the two women.
All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)
I see this film all over social media so I decided to pick it up. Halfway through I almost ditched the film because it simply wasn't my thing .Teenage angst, bullying, school drama... Only thing I loved about this film was the soundtrack which I still listen to.
One Million Yen Girl (2008)

This goes to top three films I watched this month. The mundanity of life, the sense of guilt that's always present, working low paying jobs, people who try to take advantage of you, and growing up as a person. Watching this I somehow sensed it was directed by a woman and I was right!
A Bride For Rip Van Winkle (2016)

My favorite film of this month! It was long but wort every second. I don't know how to describe it.... living a fake life, living an expected life, living a good life...It also features a lesbian romance.
Ice Cream Fever (2023)
This film had potential with it's interesting characters but unfortunately the direction and how the film was cut was all over the place. I only finished it so I could look at Serena Motola's beautiful face lmao.
Short films:
Puparia (2020)

Beautiful surreal film. It was only 3 minutes! I could have watched it for hours.
Memories (1995)

I could only find the first film of the anthology but I loved it. A haunting opera lady's memories in space...
