This month I've been getting into AKB48 and new GL's. There's so many new coming in and I still have a few I haven't finished yet. But I'm glad they air one episode per week because I'm unable to bingewatch anymore.

Films

Girl's Drive

This is an AKB48 film which features a high school girl who gets humiliated by a radio host and she goes on a journey with a bunch of girls to kill him. Despite the plot it's actually a feel good film.

(WHERE IS THE ENGLISH SUB FOR URANUS2324?? I NEED IT NOW!)

Tv series

Inside Mari
I posted a review of this earlier. The series itself isn't super well done but I watched it because I really liked the manga and I wanted to revisit the story.

Stardust Telepath (GL-ish)

This is the reason I got into AKB48. I watched the Stardust Telepath anime earlier this year and reviewed it and I was happy to hear that there is a live action version of the story. It's played by new generation of AKB48 idols and they do a great job! This is such a feel good show and even though it's very simple it's become my comfort series and I look forward to new episodes each week.

Ayaka is in love with Hiroko (GL)

This is the fourth Japanese GL airing this year! It's an office romance with comedical elements but the last few episodes have also been more dramatic and they have discussed lesbian identiy which I love. It's a bossxemployee ship (one of my favorite tropes)

The Secret of Us (GL)

I love exes to lover stories! I haven't watched all the episodes yet but so far I've enjoyed it a lot. The actresses are incredibly beautiful!

Telling the Moon about us (GL)

A Chinese GL about two actresses who seem to have great chemistry outside the screen as well. There's only one episode up but I'm really excited to see future episodes.

Meet you at the Blossom (BL)

Uncensored Chinese cultivation BL! It's only 12 episodes but I've enjoyed every episode so far. It's really funny and the leads have great chemistry.

Anime

Vtuber Legend (GL-ish)
At one point in my life i used to watch a lot of vtubers so it's interesting to see an anime about them. The protagonist is a slightly alcoholic and perverted woman whose stream goes viral after she forgets to log off. Although it's not technically a yuri the protagonist is very open about her sexual attraction towards women (not in a fanservice way imo). It's a funny anime!

haitangkitty: (Default)

I've been super stressed and even though I had plans to watch a bunch of films for Pride month I haven't been able to. But it's Pride month every month for me so I will make sure to watch later the films i had planned to. I've listened to a lot of new kpop and Chappell Roan.

Moonlight Chicken (BL)

Heartfelt romance that deals with serious issues but still manages to be very optimistic and warm. I really loved this series!

Xiao Xiang Yi Jiu (GL)

Super short Chinese GL with boss x employee relationship. Unfortunately Chinese GL's are usually short like commercials but i still loved the concept of it bc it's one of my favorite tropes.

Kiss of the Rabbit God (BL)
Short film by Andrew Thomas Huang. It's very cool film based on the myth of the rabbit god (the god of homosexual love in Chinese mythology). Beautiful cinematography, suspension, and mystery - i could have watched a full film of this!

I started reading the k-novel Saturday's Master. I love the manhwa so I decided to pick up the novel it's based on. It's an office bdsm BL.
"Pear Blossom" by Yoshiya Nobuko. It's a GL short story by the grandmother of yuri&shoujo!

There's lot of new GL coming in now. I will start watching My Marvellous Dream is You and The Secret of Us, they have both already started. There's also a new Japanese office GL coming to Gagaoolala on June 5th called Ayaka is in love with Hiroko.

haitangkitty: (Default)

I didn't have much time this month as I was focused on my university entrance exams and following the Israel-Palestine war on social media. It's been difficult to focus on watching anything. But! I still managed to watch something this month:

Films

Madoka Magica Rebellion
Even though I watched the anime series last summer for some reason I didn't watch the film immediately after. I really liked the film especially the visuals and how it was more slow-paced than the anime. Looking forward to the next Madoka film!

Challengers

This film was worth the hype! The main actors were amazing and I really liked how they were tangled up in this complicated relationship with each other. Also I love that the main female lead Tashi Duncan was an evil girlboss! I think I really have to rewatch this and also read some fics because there was so much underlying tension with these characters I want to explore it even more.

Daisies
This has been long on my watchlist. It's an avant garde classic and it's visuals have been popular on tumblr for a long time. I really liked it. I realized I really want to get back into avant garde films because I feel like they let my creativity flow and follow the structure of intuition and dreams and connotations rather than a Aristotelean plot structure.

Series

To the X who hated me (GL)
This was a short South-Korean GL on youtube. It surrounds the up and dows of a youtube lesbian couple. I really liked it although i wished it would have been longer

Calm down (GL)
Another South-Korean GL from the same studio that made Lonely Girls. There's only two episodes up but I really like the plot. A girl that has just broke up with her boyfriend gets into a thing with her friend.

Dead Boy Detectives
I've only watched a couple episodes but I really like it! Neil Gaiman is one of the producers/makers of this series which I was gladly suprised by. Funny British horror with queer undertones reminds me of early tumblr fandom culture which I love. This will be my comfort series.

Hazbin Hotel
So I finally watched it! I'm really interested in the myth of Lilith and the show is so popular I decided to give it a try. It's very entertaining and it isn't as vulgar as some (antis) have made it seem online. First I wasn't sure if i liked the musical aspect of it but then i got used to it. It's a very bold show and I'm suprised that something so unique has been made but I'm happy about it. This was also a comfort watch. I'll be watching the next season.

For Pride Month I will be watching and reading more lgbt works~

Films

Femme

Drag queen gets assaulted after his show. Later, he finds the man and starts having a complex relationship with him without him knowing that he was the man he beat up. It's a great film. It's about internalized homophobia, the fantasy of the straight man, sex, and violence.

Love lies bleeding

Body horror, lesbian thriller romance, and power. Worth the hype! it was weirder than i thought (which is a good thing).
This will definetely go to my top lesbian films and I will be rewatching. It also inspired me to start working out lmao.

Immaculate

Like lot of a24 horror films it wasn't actually scary or weird enough. I did enjoy the feminist anti-church message, and I feel like this film is very relevant to what is happening to women's rights in America (and throughout history within the Catholic Church).  I'm still not sure of Sydney Sweeney's acting skills. But I will definetely want to watch more nun films.

Les amities particulieres

French catholic boarding school for boys, forbidden love between two boys. I got interested in this because apparently Kaze to ki no uta was inspired by this. It's a delicate, beautiful and sad film. What bothered me is that the other boy looks way younger than the other (apparently the actors were 14 and 18 but they look younger)

Tv series

Baby Reindeer

TW: stalking and sa. Autobiographical story about a british comedian who goes through some horrible things and is in a cycle of abuse and self-hatred. This was really good, it was complex and an important story. Reminds me of another autobiographical tv series about an sa survivor called I may destroy you (which I also recommend).

Started 2 GL's: Lonely Girls (South-Korea, youtube) and Fragrance of the first flower (Taiwan, gagaoolala)

Anime

Tadaima, okaeri (BL)
Sweet family omegaverse. Not a lot of plot but i still like it

Whisper me a love song (GL)
Cute romance! I like that it kinda takes the instant love trope but it seems to go about it in a different way.

Kaze to ki no uta (BL)

Vintage BL classic! I really loved this! The art style is beautiful and nostalgic.

Rose of Versailles

Inspired by kazeki, I wanted to watch more vintage anime. I've only watched 10 episodes but I really like it.  I love the old school shoujo style, history from a female perspective, and I have a crush on Lady Oscar <3

Games (visual novels)

National park Girls (GL)

Love the aesthetics, makes me wanna go camping. But it's very slow paced and i still don't get what the main plot is. I'm not sure if i'm gonna finish this.

Re;Start (BL)

Mystery BL puzzle game from the same studio that made Amelie. I like the push-and pull type of romance, not a very relaxing game but the puzzles were simple enough for me to get through them. i loved the ending and how everything tied into together to a complete story!

LipTrip: My Boss is my heat suppressant?! (GL)

Bit lewd but overall cute omegaverse office romance, i binged this it was so addictive! loved the aesthetics

OshiRabu: Waifus over Husbandos (GL)

The name is ridiculous i know it but i picked this because it's made by the same studio as LipTrip. I like that the romance is between a fujoshi otaku and a cool gyaru girl!

+ I've finished reading Nabokov's Lolita, but I will write about it later

TV wrap up

haitangkitty: (Default)
I recently finished two series I started last month. This is going to be a short review of them.

My Strawberry Film
8 episodes, Gagaoolala, Japanese, slice of life

Beautiful slice of life drama surrounding a mystery of a girl in a video tape. The four high schoolers are having complex relationship with each other but the drama is very delicate and natural. The plot itself is very simple but I was never bored. As I previously said, this was mistakenly marketed as BL which it is not but it deals with lgbt characters although there isn't a final happy gay couple. I knew from the beginning it wasn't going to be a queer romance but I kept watching because it was beautifully done and i loved the portrayal of youth and friendship.

BLANK The Series
6 episodes, Youtube, Thai, GL

This was so good! I got emotional in the last episode. The main leads couldn't be more different in personality: 20-year old girl who's obssessed with an older woman who's emotionally very distant but also very considerate. The acting was so good. This series also felt very natural and it lacks the melodrama that thai dramas usually have. I love that we got a mother figure as a love interest 😭❤️ I'm so happy that the series is going to have a S2 soon!

Tv series

GAP (GL)

I've been watching this slowly because i like it so much i don't want it to end! This is so good and it might be the best gl drama i've watched. I really like the bossxemployee/sunshinexgrumpy dynamic

Blank (GL)

Western GL fandom cancelled this before it aired because it has a 16 year age gap. I don't mind it if it's well done  and I actually really like this series, it's very realistic in tone.

Pyramid Game

I'm halfway through, haven't finished it bc i want to binge it bc its so intense. I will post analysis of this later because I'm really invested in this drama. It's about bullying in an all-girls school. I really love the portrayal of complex female relationships

My Strawberry Film
This was marketed as BL but I don't think it's one. There's only 2 episodes left and no progression of romance for anyone. But I watched it because it's beautifully directed and it's interesting to see how the 4 young people deal with their relationships with each other.

Takara-Kun & Amagi-Kun (BL)
Cuuuuute! I usually don't watch high school romance but this was exeption because I was looking for something sweet and I heard this one was great. I think I prefer Japanese BL, it's just something about how they are directed that feels natural.

+and finished Cherry Magic anime, which I really enjoyed. I'm looking forward to the next BL omegaverse anime Okaeri Tadaima airing next month.

Film

Drive-Away Dolls

I already made a post about how much I loved this movie. More fun and sexy lesbian films!

Games

Amelie
Yuri visual novel, and i didn't know it was horror i freaked out! i love how it plays the same story but from different POV it adds to the horror, not many choices but they dictate the story so i went back to the story to go further, lot of repetition which was sometimes kinda annoying. But i loved how the story revealed more of itself and that the story got longer and more complex the further i went into the game.

I'll definetely be playing more yuri visual novels in the future!

Films

I didn't watch many films this month. I've been mostly watching tv series and reading fanfic on my free time. This month's films have been 2 kinky straight romance + 2 lesbian romances.

The Secretary (2002)

Secretary masochist x boss dom. This was less scandalous than I thought but the main leads had great chemistry. The psychological side of BDSM was also explored, the main character uses it as a replacement for self-harm and gradually througout the relationship she becomes more independent. The ending was too rom com style for me and imo it broke the tone of the film.

Love and Leashes (2022)

This is a South-Korean BDSM romance I found from Netflix. I heard it's a realistic portrayal of BDSM and the film does go through the roles and rules. We finally have femme domme representation! The play sessions were sometimes too short and the erotic side of this film wasn't very strong although it's a depiction of BDSM, it was more of a funny weird thing. But the film kept me interested and it had its fun moments.

Light, Light, Light (2023)

Finnish film set in the 80's, Chernobyl has just exploded and two teenage girls meet a a little town. I loved the nostalgic vibes and 80's soundtrack on this film. Unfortunately it's told from the past tense through memories and time skips, which made the film less emotionally intense. Sometimes the scenes were more like from a music video. It was a beautiful but sad film.

Duck Butter (2018)

I don't know how to feel about this film. During my watching experience I was fully invested in the story, as it is very time-intense depicting 24hours. How the two women become more involved with each other and with each other's traumas is interesting. Something that starts out as a spontaneous adventure ends up being a codependent nightmare. Sergio's character was super interesting. The film's grittiness reminded me of the HBO show Girls, although it wasn't as sarcastic in tone. What put me off how many poop jokes were during the film and in the end there's actual shit involved in one scene. It sure isn't a beautiful film, but very chaotic.

Tv-series

I finished 3 series I started last month:

Pit Babe (BL)

The first omegaverse show! The first part of this story was more focused on car racing, which isn't my thing. The omegaverse stuff became more important to the plot in the second half. The ending was full of twists and turns, it was super dramatic. I still think it should have been an omegaxalpha story instead of alphaxalpha, but this is a great start and hopefully there will be more omegaverse stories.

Chaser Game W (GL)
My favorite show I've watched this year. Lovers to enemies to lovers again, which I loved. I also enjoyed the female-centric workplace and great outfits. My only problem was that it was too short: the ending would have been a little less rushed if it had been 2-3 more episodes. Overall, a great story !

Love Senior (GL)
So much lesbian drama with engineering students! The main couple have both three different girls going after them and that's what causes the major drama in this story. I found the episodes a little bit too long and the drama was sometimes slacking. But the lead pair is absolutely beautiful and have great chemistry. I didn't like the coma and amnesia trope in the ending but I'm glad it was a happy ending eventually.

New series I finished:

Happy Shiny People (
doc)
Continuing my cult documentary obsession. This one is about Christian cult-like movement that the reality show star family Duggars are part of. It's about abuse, exploitation and sexual assault that is rampant in the Church. The ex-members and family members share how the cult prepares, especially women, for the perfect victim mindset. The cult also encourages homeschooling and has a mission to send those homeschooled Christians to government positions. It's terrifying how much political power these kind of people have in the US!

Blueming  (BL)

My first South-Korean BL. This was a pretty short show. I noticed how different in direction style it is to Thai BL's, which have lot of dialogue and close-ups. This BL focused in a film school, which I love since I've been thinking about applying to one. It has one of my favorite tropes of someone who considers themselves an outsider has a popular person fall in love with them. This was somehow very realistic in tone.

Books

The Imperial Uncle
It's been a while since I've read a new danmei. I was looking for something short to see how to execute a romance in around 400 pages. This one is a political drama told from a first-person narrative. The main character is a hopeless romantic and the romance in this danmei is very... delicate? Romantic in an old-fashioned way. The main character Prince Huai is part of a political conspiration and the story is much about nostalgia and finding your place in the world, which I loved.

+ I'm halfway through Little Life, which I'll hopefully finish next month
haitangkitty: (Default)
I watched 12 films this month out of which 2 were short films. 7 of them had some sort of queer romance.

Ballerina (2023)

Korean Netflix female revenge thriller. I loved the acting and cinematography, but I wished there
would have been more about the friendship between the two female leads.

Saltburn (2023)

I gave into peer pressure and watched it because it was trending! I heard it's like Tom Ripley, which I love so I gave this a try. It has some of my favorite topics including class differences, elite school, and obsessive homoerotic pining. Overall I liked it but it bothers me that it could have been better If there had been more chemistry between Felix and Oliver, I feel like Felix and Farleigh had more chemistry. Another thing was that there could have been more horror/mystery to my taste.

EIleen (2023)

Very interesting, mysterious film that almost seems like a short story. Like Saltburn, this also has queer undertones. The atmosphere was very strong in this film.

Ema (2019)

Chilean drama about a couple who loses their adoptive son. I loved this film and how it portrayed dance, community, sex, loss, and how interesting it portrayed the main character Emma.

Take Me Home (2020)
A horrible accident happens which changes the trajectory of three people. The main characters are a lesbian couple who now become sort of like parents while dealing with loss and disability. This film was a little bit too sad for my taste.

Farewell Song (2019)
A band that is on it's last tour. The two girls in the band go through their difficult relationship between each other. I loved the music in this film. It's also sad in the sense that the love is never truly reciprocated in the relationship between the two women.

All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)
I see this film all over social media so I decided to pick it up. Halfway through I almost ditched the film because it simply wasn't my thing .Teenage angst, bullying, school drama... Only thing I loved about this film was the soundtrack which I still listen to.

One Million Yen Girl (2008)

This goes to top three films I watched this month. The mundanity of life, the sense of guilt that's always present, working low paying jobs, people who try to take advantage of you, and growing up as a person. Watching this I somehow sensed it was directed by a woman and I was right!

A Bride For Rip Van Winkle (2016)

My favorite film of this month! It was long but wort every second. I don't know how to describe it.... living a fake life, living an expected life, living a good life...It also features a lesbian romance.

Ice Cream Fever (2023)
This film had potential with it's interesting characters but unfortunately the direction and how the film was cut was all over the place. I only finished it so I could look at Serena Motola's beautiful face lmao.

Short films:

Puparia (2020)

Beautiful surreal film. It was only 3 minutes! I could have watched it for hours.

Memories (1995)

I could only find the first film of the anthology but I loved it. A haunting opera lady's memories in space...

haitangkitty: (Default)
Love Senior

Cute college GL! It has the senior-junior relationship that's common in yuri. This is my first Thai GL and I'm excited for all the works that are coming in 2024!

Pit Babe

I picked this up because it's the first omegaverse tv show! It centers around car racing (not something I'm super into) between an alpha x alpha couple. There's a lot of drama going on in this show.

Chaser Game W

My new favorite GL! This one is Japanese. It's an friends to enemies to lovers between a boss and an employee who are former lovers. I love their dynamic so much and the actresses are so beautiful!

My Name

I picked this up because it has two things I love: Han So Hee and female revenge.

Cherry Magic

I'm so glad Cherry Magic got an anime! I've seen the Japanese BL version of it but I'm actually enjoying this anime even more!
Office dramas might be my new favorite genre.

haitangkitty: (Default)

This month's films were predominantly sapphic undertones 80% and 20% horror films. I think it's how I want my films from now on.

This month I was just trying to watch as many films that have been on my watchlist for a long time because in 2024 I'll be more focusing on gaming.

The Summer (2023)

Korean GL animation that follows highschool lovers to their college days. Bittersweet and beautiful film.

My Broken Mariko (2022)

Japanese film about a woman who's best friend kills herself and how she deals with it. I actually liked the film better than the manga it's based on.

Martyrs (2008)

Canadian-French horror film. This shook me to my core. I rarely watch horror films but when I do watch they stay with me for a long time. I'm sure Martyrs will be a film like that. It's about abuse, torture, martyrdom, friendship, and survival. It starts off as a revenge film halfway through it goes back to the beginning: the abuse that is done my mysterious organisation that looks for martyrs through torturing young women. It's a horror film so the abused do not get revenge in the end and that way it is a horrifying film. What I found interesting in the film was specifically the friendship the two abused girls form and how they are connected, I think that there is a sapphic undertone in their relationship. One of the girls who is out for revenge ends up dying to her hallusications through self-harm but the other girl eventually becomes a martyr. christian belief that pain makes a saint like joan d'arc, transcend existence and see life after death.

Fatal Frame (2014)

Japanese horror film. I haven't played the game it's based on but I actually bought it after watching the film! It centers around a curse that only afflicts young women in a girl's monastery. The idea was great but the execution was a bit dull bit it got better towards the end as the mysteries of the young girl started to unwrap. There was sapphic undertones in this film as well (what is it about lesbians and horror that go so well together?)

Kamikaze Girls (2004)

My favorite so far. I've been meaning to watch this for years! It's a Japanese comedy focusing on friendship, girlhood and counterculture (lolita and yankee). It's about living your life trutfully and the power of friendship <3

Tetsuo the iron man (1989)

Experimental japanese body horror. technology...psychosexuality....unexpected gay vibes

D.E.B.S. (2004)

Campy y2k spy lesbian romance. I loooved this! It was such a fun film. It executed the spy x assassin love story much better than Killing Eve.

haitangkitty: (Default)
I used to be a huge cinéphile and watched films almost every day. For some reason I haven't watched that many in recent years. Luckily, I found a tiktok focusing on lesbian film content and that inspired me to finally watch more lesbian films.

Here's some reviews of lesbian films I've watched last month:

Knife + Heart
Yann Gonzales,2018, French

This is more of a queer film than strictly a lesbian film. It's a very visually beautiful horror thriller set in 1979 and follows a group of gay softcore porn production team. A mysterious murderer is on the loose who kills their actors. The main character is wonderfully played by Vanessa Paradis, an alcoholic lesbian porn director/producer who is going through a breakup. The murderer can be interpreted as many things that have challenging the queer community such as aids-crisis and homophobia. I love how the film focuses on the queer community, it's portrayed as a marginalized community with messy and funny characters who form important bonds with each other. This is probably one of the best queer films I've seen.

Benedetta
Paul Verhoeven, 2021, French

I didn't have high expectations for this one. I knew it was going to be fully male gazey but I coudn't resist the idea of sexy lesbian nuns in medieval France so I decided to give this film a try. I was maybe hoping that I would secretly like it but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Let's start off with the fact that there was no chemistry between the two leads. That's one of the reasons why the sex scenes looked like straight out of porn. I don't mean that in a way that lesbian sex portrayed in films is always porn-like but in this case it was because it lacked eroticism. It's a shame because the film is otherwise good (and clearly has a high budget) so it's such a waste that the two leads have no connection. Shame and forbidden love could have so much tension and eroticism but that part of their relationship was portrayed more like a porn film than an arthouse film. As for the main character Benedetta I found her interesting. She is a complex and a strong character who believes herself to be a saint. I love the portrayal of insane women on media so at least that part was satisfying to me. What was a suprise to me that this was actually based or inspired by a real lesbian nun in medieval France.

Girl's Encounter
Yuka Eda, 2018, Japanese

Bullied girl meets a beautiful mysterious girl and they instantly form a friendship. This is a delicate and beautiful, slow-paced films that tackles adolescent angst, girl crushes and womanhood. There is repeating motif of a woman compared to a caterpillar. Beautiful, exploited, and short-lived. This film was like a novella, it kept secrets about the love interest until the very end. I noticed that there is a common trope in queer films for the couple to escape from their current life situation and start a new life together. This film also portrays that fantasy.

The Five Devils
Lea Mysius, 2022, French

An ex-lesbian lover comes to town and the past starts to haunt a family. This film has some magical realism to it which I really enjoyed. The past and current are intertwined in an interesting way. This film also portrayed repressed feelings well, and one of the most memorable scenes in the film is when the two ex-lovers drunkenly sing karaoke in local bar (in the picture). This film has us against the world - type of romance;, in one life the world took over our love but in the second life we are reunited again.

Bottoms
Emma Seligman, 2023, American

An hommage to the american high school comedy genre with a feminist and lesbian twist.
Fun film 5/5 will watch again.

+ I watched tons of short films on GagaOOlala, similar to Girl's Encounter, they mostly surround around bittersweet teen girl romance. My favorite ones mentioning are Lucky Fish, which features two Asian-American teens who meet at a restaurant and a Thai GL Serpent's Song which surrounds around faith, grief and forbidden love in a monastery.
