Halloween Films: More films!
Oct. 30th, 2024 10:28 amTexas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Only slasher I've watched so far. During the film I kept thinking about the similarities to Easy Rider, although it's not a horror film. Something about free spirited people encountering violence in the rural South... I can see why this film is a classic.
Carrie (1976)

I read the book when I was 14 and I could really relate to Carrie. I don't know why it took so long for me to finally watch the film. I've seen people critisizing the film saying Sissy Spacek is too beautiful for the role of Carrie. I get what they mean but I think she did a great performance. Apparently Mike Flanagan is directing a tv series remake and I don't know how I feel about that. I feel like the book went into much more detail about the trauma of the abusive religious upbringing and overall the angst and isolation of Carrie.
May (2002)

I can't believe I haven't watched this film before. I'm not suprised it's listed as one of those "girlhood" films I see online. I feel like May is truly a weird girl similar to the sisters in Ginger Snaps but maybe even weirder.
Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

This is more comedy/romance than horror but I still loved it. It felt good to watch a feel good film after watching scary and creepy films. The dialogue in this film was so funny. It has become quite popular on tumblr and I feel like it will become a cult classic.

I have so many horror films on my watchlist but I haven't been able to watch as much as I'd like to. I've had to take some days when I don't watch any horror because it really has started to influence me. So far 3 films have made me feel disgusted and scared and I feel like those films have stayed with me. It doesn't help that I watched Rotten Mango's true crime videos about nth room case in South Korea and the P Diddy case. Those real life crimes actually disgusted me and affected my mental health way more than the horror films. I will either end my Halloween film challenge now or end it by watching some fun and sexy vampire films. I'm also watching the AKB48 horror series Crow's Blood starring Sakura Miyawaki. So maybe I'm not done yet and I will extend this challenge to next week but then I will take a long pause from anything scary!

Date: 2024-10-30 11:42 pm (UTC)It's odd that there's criticism about Sissy Spacek being too beautiful since I think she embodied the loner/outcast role very well, and the way her face was after the pig's blood being spilled on her, her eyes alone are haunting and unnerving. But then again, every adaptation of Carrie has people criticizing whoever the actress is chosen for being "too conventionally pretty" for one reason or another, especially when the book counterpart is described as the opposite. Sadly, this is a Hollywood problem in general. Nevertheless, Sissy Spacek did amazingly well in the role.
(I also don't know how to feel about Mike Flanagan taking on Carrie, like I think the guy is fine enough but he's garnered a lot of criticism from horror fans, particularly fans of Gothic horror, of his handling of the things he's adapting by stripping away vital things from these stories for his own interpretation. IDK.)
I loved May when I watched it many years ago. She truly is a weird girl, and weird in a lonely way. I felt for her and her need to connect, get close with others, and wanting so badly to create a friend. The ending was so sad.
I have yet to watch Lisa Frankenstein, but I'm excited to because I love a good comedy horror, the aesthetics look incredible and based on the things I've seen from it I know I'm just going to have a good, fun time.

Date: 2024-11-06 04:55 pm (UTC)I've seen few Mika Flanagan series and they were okay but not really scary or creepy to me. I've also seen some hardcore horror fans dislike his work.
