November in films
Nov. 30th, 2023 02:15 pmThis month's films were predominantly sapphic undertones 80% and 20% horror films. I think it's how I want my films from now on.
This month I was just trying to watch as many films that have been on my watchlist for a long time because in 2024 I'll be more focusing on gaming.
The Summer (2023)
Korean GL animation that follows highschool lovers to their college days. Bittersweet and beautiful film.
My Broken Mariko (2022)
Japanese film about a woman who's best friend kills herself and how she deals with it. I actually liked the film better than the manga it's based on.
Martyrs (2008)
Canadian-French horror film. This shook me to my core. I rarely watch horror films but when I do watch they stay with me for a long time. I'm sure Martyrs will be a film like that. It's about abuse, torture, martyrdom, friendship, and survival. It starts off as a revenge film halfway through it goes back to the beginning: the abuse that is done my mysterious organisation that looks for martyrs through torturing young women. It's a horror film so the abused do not get revenge in the end and that way it is a horrifying film. What I found interesting in the film was specifically the friendship the two abused girls form and how they are connected, I think that there is a sapphic undertone in their relationship. One of the girls who is out for revenge ends up dying to her hallusications through self-harm but the other girl eventually becomes a martyr. christian belief that pain makes a saint like joan d'arc, transcend existence and see life after death.
Fatal Frame (2014)
Japanese horror film. I haven't played the game it's based on but I actually bought it after watching the film! It centers around a curse that only afflicts young women in a girl's monastery. The idea was great but the execution was a bit dull bit it got better towards the end as the mysteries of the young girl started to unwrap. There was sapphic undertones in this film as well (what is it about lesbians and horror that go so well together?)
Kamikaze Girls (2004)
My favorite so far. I've been meaning to watch this for years! It's a Japanese comedy focusing on friendship, girlhood and counterculture (lolita and yankee). It's about living your life trutfully and the power of friendship <3
Tetsuo the iron man (1989)
Experimental japanese body horror. technology...psychosexuality....unexpected gay vibes
D.E.B.S. (2004)
Campy y2k spy lesbian romance. I loooved this! It was such a fun film. It executed the spy x assassin love story much better than Killing Eve.
