December in Films

This month I watched 11 films.

Marry my Dead Body (2022)
Taiwanese Netflix film. Ghost marriage with a crime-solving side plot. I was eventually dissapointed in it because i was queer baited thinking it would be a romance when actually only only one of the main characters is gay. Still, it was a fun film.

Mickey on the Road (2020)
Another queer bait film. I thought it was going to be a romance but it was the typical one of them is lesbian in love with a straight best friend -trope. The film did focus on how the men in the friend's lives ultimately dissapointed in them and how their friendship is at the core of everything, which I really liked.

The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Miyazaki's latest film! I really loved this and was not dissapointed. I watched this in cinemas and it was my first experience seeing a Ghibli film on big screen. I think next month I will watch all the Ghibli films I haven't seen already. .

Kill Boksoon (2023)
Korean Netflix thriller about a assassin mother and her lesbian daughter. I love how it explored the world of assassins and the mother-daughter relatioship. This also features women who kick men's asses which I always love.

Cam (2018)
Camgirl gets her show stolen from her doppelganger. This has kind of horror vibes but in my opinion it could have gone further.

Green Night (2023)

I loved this! Lesbian thriller/romance about drug deal gone wrong, abusive men, and escaping horrible situations. I only wished it could have been longer. The acting was great and I loved the romance.

Love/Juice (2000)
This film had similar vibes that Kyoko Okazaki's mangas have. Two best friends/roommates who work as hostesses. This unfortunately also has the lesbian in love with her straight best friend which made the film heartbreaking.

Moonlit Winter (2019)
Beautiful slow-paced Korean winter lesbian film about past lovers, repression, and family.

Sayounara (2018)
This was the third film with a similar plot I've seen: two friends who have feelings for each other but one of them ends up killing herself because she has suffered csa&incest. The focus in this film is also in the surviving friend who tries to go on in her life after her friend's death.

Stranger by the Shore (2020)
BL anime. I haven't read the manga but will check it out now because I really liked this. I loved the scenery and the vibes, the will they or won't they aspect of their relationship. This also deals with homophobia which made it realistic.

Doukyusei (2016)
Super cute BL anime. I actually liked this better than the manga. Feel good vibes. I love pairings where one of them feels not worthy of love and the other one does everything to convince them that they are.

+ tv-series My Personal Weatherman (2023)

I've only seen 3 BL dramas all of which are Thai. This was a Japanese BL with bdsm undertones in their relationship, or more realistically: a very toxic and abusive relationship. It was interesting to see how their relationship progressed. They have such an interesting relationship. Insecurity about oneself is at the hear of their troubles which causes an uneven power dynamic. I especially loved the last episodes

Watchlist: Love Lies Bleeding

I'm really looking forward to this new lesbian thriller! It's premiering in festivals next month and is supposed to come to cinemas in March 2023. The actresses are hot and I loved the director's previous film Saint Maude. I've watched this trailer several times and can't wait for the film!
